In less than a month the days will be getting longer, but for now winter is already upon us, at least here in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. So with a desire to warm us up, I wanted to share a new photo only a very few of you have already seen, that harkens back to lush early Autumn days and sundrenched vineyards in far off Southern France.
This photograph was made in the famous Chateauneuf du Pape Appellation. The largest city nearby is Avignon where the Popes used to reside when they were not in Rome. |

The warm buttery light of autumn was bathing the ancient building in the background while it ripened the grapes on the vines – it is still amazing to me that grapevines will grow in such rocky soil, but they do – and they even have more unique flavors because they are “stressed” that way. Additionally the rocks impart a distinctive "terrior" to the area’s vineyards – plus they keep the vines warmer at night as they radiate the heat they collected all day.
